Canker outbreak avoidable
15 Aug 2005

A Federal Senate inquiry heard that attempts to survey citrus orchards in the Emerald district for citrus tristeza virus in 2002 were abandoned after the Queensland Department of Primary Industries decided it could not forcefully enter properties without the owners' permission. The department wanted to check the other properties for CTV after inconclusive tests at Evergreen Farms identified a strain of the virus that may have been exotic. However, the owners of 2PH Farms, told the inquiry that rival orchardists did not want to participate unless the survey results were shared with the farmers.
