Part-timers the growth segment in farming
17 Aug 2005

There are fewer farms in Australia today than 10 years ago, but the types of farms are far more diverse. Research by the Australian Farm Institute found there were 131,600 farms in 2003, down 10 per cent on 1994. The number of smaller farms, with output between $5000 and $22,500, fell by 28 per cent. The study found that the number of fruit and vegetable businesses expanded by 10 per cent over the past decade. Horticulture also had the greatest proportion of businesses turning over more than $2 million a year. The study found about 40per cent of farmers ran smaller farms, defined as those with an annual turnover of $100,000 or less, and earned 91 per cent of their income off-farm.
