South Australian farmers dream of the good times 30 Aug 2005
Agribusiness Association of Australia sees only good times for farmers, with a a new golden era similar to the boom years of the early 1950s due to the growing appetite for imported food from India and China. An agribusiness conference in Adelaide heard other optimistic scenarios, including predictions of a tenfold increase in rural production in the dryland farming country on the Yorke and Eyre peninsulas, assuming that “the cost of desalination of seawater drops below 40 cents a kilolitre,” making irrigation an economic option.
