Tasmanian farmers leave plots fallow
6 Sep 2005

Tasmania potato growers rejected McCain Foods proposal to drop contract prices by seven per cent. Grower representatives said the proposed price of $16.40 a tonne was not enough, and was lower than that announced by Simplot. Tasmanian growers are also facing cuts to their pea and poppy incomes. The Tasmanian Farmers and Growers Association said these combined price cuts meant about 20,000 hectares would not see traditional crops planted.
