Transport a bigger burden in horticulture
13 Sep 2005

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said it estimated average marketing and transport costs of agricultural commodities at nine per cent of the gross value of all agricultural production in 2003/04. Bananas were the costliest goods to transport, at 31 per cent of the value of the crop, followed by tomatoes at 22 per cent. Potatoes and wheat each cost 14 per cent to market. Transport costs swallowed 12 per cent of the value of the barley crop, but only three per cent of the value of the grape crop.
