One quarter of Sunraysia orange crop goes to rot
26 Sep 2005

Abuot a quarter of the annual orange crop of the Sunraysia region of north-western Victoria will be dumped. Sunraysia citrus growers have left about 25,000 tonnes of oranges to rot, or sold cheaply as cow food. As much ast 36,000 tonnes of a 155,000-tonne harvest may go to waste. Growers in the region tore up their summer valencia trees about a decade ago and instead planted navel oranges, in anticipation of lucrative new markets opening up.
