Warm weather sends prices bananas
4 Oct 2005

Banana growers and traders say a warm winter in northern Queensland, where 80 per cent of the fruit is grown in Australia, has caused the price of the fruit to exceed $1 each. Banana prices have exceeded this level for six weeks. The Australian Banana Growers Council said the warm winter in north Queensland meant bananas were ready too early. As a result, there was an oversupply during the winter, and now a shortage this spring. The banana supply is expected to pick up by mid November.
