Valencia orange supply in excess 13 Oct 2005
More than 50,000 tonnes of valencia oranges may be dumped or fed to cattle this season because of a flood of Brazilian orange juice imports. It follows a disastrous navel season, in which 25,000 tonnes have been dumped after growers again failed to gain access to China. Australia's valencia production this season is expected to be 300,000 tonnes, up 81,000 tonnes on last year and the largest crop in three years. Juice processors are expected to take nearly 200,000 tonnes, with 150,000 tonnes earmarked for domestic and export markets. That leaves 50,000 tonnes without a home.
