Pacific Island nations seek to supply seasonal labour
26 Oct 2005

Australia’s horticultural skills shortage could be relieved with the help of workers from the Pacific Islands according researchers from Swinburne’s Institute for Social Research, in Melbourne. At this week’s meeting of the Pacific Island Forum in Papua New Guinea, the Australian Government will come under renewed pressure to allow Pacific Islanders to work in Australia. The Government has resisted this lobbying. The Swan Hill Rural City Council and Mildura’s Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board and development agency Oxfam/Community Aid Abroad want to pilot seasonal labour from the Pacific in Australia.
