Aussies not keen to pick fruit
21 Nov 2005

Growers say they are being forced to abandon crops because they can no longer find people for the physically demanding and very seasonal work of fruit and vegetable harvesting. The National Farmers Federation says that fewer Australians are willing to do the work and backs industry calls for foreign guest workers to be allowed in to the country. The federal opposition and the ACTU have cautiously backed proposals to grant 10,000 working visas per year to pacific islanders.
