Imports dry up grower returns
19 Jan 2006

Imported sultanas, currants and raisins, mostly from Turkey, Iran and Greece have almost tripled in the past decade forcing local prices down. The growers association said it expected returns to growers to fall by about $200 a tonne this season. Imports have risen from 7368 tonees in 1994/95 to over 21,000 tonnes last year. Growers returns have dropped from an average of $1400 per tonne in 1985 to about $1200 per tonne last year.
