Pacific islanders may pick our fruit 23 Jan 2006
Federal parliamentarians will investigate using Pacific Islanders as seasonal workers to address the rural labour shortage. A senate committee will inquire into the viability of a harvest season scheme following calls from the National Farmers Federation and Pacific leaders, while cautious support for the idea has been expressed by the ACTU. Submissions close on the 10 March and the committee will report by the 17 August. The committee is likely to visit several agricultural regions around the eastern states.
