Fire blight risk excessive for some 7 Feb 2006
Federal government backbencher Russell Broadbent said the New Zealand campaign to end to the current ban on the importation of their apples into Australia should be resisted, and that the kiwis should not assume the World Trade Organisation would rule in their favour. NZ apples have been banned since 1921 due to the prevalence of the apple disease fire blight. In 1998 the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service formally rejected an NZ application to end the ban. Biosecurity Australia's Inspection Risk Analysis draft report found that fire blight bacteria can be present and survive on apples even when that fruit is sourced from what appears to be a symptom-free orchard.
