Chips down in potato tussle 21 Feb 2006
Rebel grower Tony Galati will challenge the authority of Western Australia’s potato regulator, the last of its kind in Australia. Galati will launch Federal Court action today claiming WA's Marketing of Potatoes Act 1946 contravenes both the Federal Trade Practices Act and the Commonwealth Constitution by giving the Potato Marketing Corporation an anti-competitive monopoly. The PMC controls all domestic table potato production and sales in WA. Galati estimates he has sold more than half of the 530 tonnes of potatoes he decided to offer direct to the public for 30¢ a kilogram after the PMC refused to buy them at a discounted rate so consumers could get a bargain.
