Banana crop wiped out 21 Mar 2006
The banana, sugar cane, paw paw, and avocado crops around Tully and Innisfail have been devastated by Cyclone Larry just as banana and avocado picking was getting underway. The $325 million local banana industry has been wiped out, leaving thousands of farm workers without employment. The region produces 90 per cent of Australia’s bananas and 25 per cent of the national sugar crop and shortages and higher retail prices are expected. Just a handful of coastal farms survived the storm, which hit early yesterday morning.
