Sugar and Banana crops not covered by insurance
21 Mar 2006

About 450 Innisfail and Tully banana farmers who have lost this year’s crops to Cyclone Larry did not have crop insurance and will rely on the understanding of their banks over the next nine months. Wesfarmers Federation Insurance said it no longer provided crop coverage although it is expecting a large number of claims for houses and caravans. Commercial insurer CGU said it had received about 300 claims from the Cairns and Innisfail areas but said that its policies do not cover against cyclone damage to sugar crops.
