North Queensland economy devastated
21 Mar 2006

Three to four thousand jobs have been lost along with 200,000 tonnes or 90 per cent of Australia’s cavendish banana crop in far north Queensland as a result of Cyclone Larry. Mango, lychee, passionfruit and rambutan crops in the region south of Cairns have also been devastated and shortages and price rises are expected to flow through to consumers within two weeks. The tourism industry, which relies on backpackers who often get picking work to support their travels will also be severely affected. Tourist islands were largely unaffected by the storm.
