Banana growers oppose imports
22 Mar 2006

The Australian Banana Growers Council will fight any bid to import bananas, despite stocks of Queensland bananas likely to run out next week. Industry sources said prices might rise to $9 kg. Yesterday bananas were selling for $45 per carton, three times the price before Cyclone Larry. Banana growers estimate losses at about $500 million.
