Big vegie farmers do better
7 Apr 2006

One third of vegetable farmers produce almost three quarters of the industry’s product. ABARE says large vegetable farms are more profitable and have significantly higher rates of return than smaller operations. In 2004-05, vegetable farmers achieved average cash incomes of $123,000 at an average return of 3.1 per cent. Broadacre crop farmers had average cash incomes of $107,000 over the three years to 2004-05. Competitive pressure is increasing on exports, while imported fresh vegetables equal 1 per cent of domestic production.
