A box of bananas costs $100
27 Apr 2006

The Australian Banana Growers Council said that the average quantity of bananas coming on to the market each week had plummeted from 400,000 to 40,000 cartons, following the devastation of plantations in north Queensland by Cyclone Larry last month. A 13-kilogram box of high quality, large bananas cost upwards of $100 at the Melbourne Wholesale Markets in West Melbourne yesterday, compared with a price of between $22 and $28 a box before the cyclone struck.
