New Zealand drops ban on Aussie bananas
16 Jun 2006

A ban on Australian banana exports to New Zealand has been lifted, but exports are not expected to resume before the end of the year as shortages continue. New Zealand banned Australian bananas after an outbreak of Papaya fruit fly in 1995 and only lifted the ban after new research showed that green bananas did not act as a host for the flies. The Banana Growers Council said New Zealand, Australia’s only export market for bananas, was a very competitive market and niche varieties like Lady Fingers may prove the best opportunity for sales.
