Kiwi apple imports possible by end of 2006 3 Jul 2006
Biosecurity Australia has told Pipfruit New Zealand it wants to have an import regime in place by the end of the year. But New Zealand apple growers seeking access to the Australian market are not holding out hopes that biosecurity rules will be relaxed for them. Australian rules have precluded import of NZ apples for 85 years. Last year, Biosecurity Australia said it would allow imports as long as growers undertook chlorine washes and twice-yearly orchard inspections, principally to check for the bacterial disease fire blight. Kiwi growers said the rules were so tough exports would be uneconomic.
