Filipino bananas could be here this year 10 Jul 2006
A third draft import risk assessment on bananas from the Phillipines will be delivered to government later this year, despite the Filipino government expecting it on the 30 June. The second draft, delivered in 2004, recommended allowing imports, but was not accepted amid pressure from growers to protect local crops from moko and black sigatoka. Local production has fallen from 400,000 cartons per week to 20,000. Filipino bananas could be retailing in Australia for $1 per kilo compared to current prices of $12.
