Standover racket alleged in Goulburn Valley
4 Aug 2006

Police in Victoria claim an extortion and standover ring is operating in the fruit industry in the Goulburn Valley. Police raided nine properties and seized 12 rifles, a crossbow, a large quantity of steroids and tens of thousands of dollars in cash at properties in Shepparton, Cobram, Yarrawonga and Strathmerton. They will allege that some members of the syndicate set fire to several properties, causing $2 million damage, as part of a turf war in the fruit industry. Alleged tactics used by the syndicate to intimidate smaller players included assault, the destruction of greenhouses and water supply pipes, and poisoning dogs, sources have claimed.
