Demand for island harvesters doubted 23 Aug 2006
The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations said there was no evidence of a harvest labour shortage. DEWR argued that demands on prospective employers to cover transport, accommodation and health costs under any scheme to import seasonal guest worked from Pacific islands made such a scheme too risky. Australian farmers, Pacific nations and bodies such as the World Bank want Pacific Island workers to help harvest fruit and vegetable crops.
