Detailed plans unveiled for Melbourne Market
11 Sep 2006

The Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market will more than triple in size under plans for the proposed $300 million centre will be built on a 133-hectare piece of land next to the Hume Highway in Epping, 18 kilometres north of the city. The potential market area, with the addition of the national flower centre and warehousing, is 47 hectares. The current wholesale market on Footscray Road in West Melbourne is 30 hectares. The government aims to start building in 2008 and have the market operating by late 2010, but the plan is opposed by many tenants.
