Frost kills many stone fruits in Goulburn Valley 26 Sep 2006
Stone fruit growers in northern Victoria's Goulburn Valley said severe frost caused farm-gate losses expected to exceed $75 million. Temperatures fell to minus five degrees in some parts of the region early on Monday, causing widespread damage to orchards. Early estimates indicate the apricot crop, previously forecast at 12,000 tonnes, has been wiped out. Around 50 per cent of plums, nectarines, peaches and pears have been destroyed. Fruitgrowers Victoria said the region supplied more than 80 per cent of Australia's pear crop.
