300,000 tonnes of fruit lost to frost
27 Sep 2006

Fruit Growers Victoria said the impact of this week’s severe frost in the Goulburn Valley region would not be as bad as Cyclone Larry's impact on the banana industry earlier this year, because apricots could be imported to make up the shortfall. The frost had hit about 300 farmers and destroyed 300,000 tonnes of fruit. Growers are seeking government assistance package akin to the wages subsidy provided to Queensland banana growers in the wake of Cyclone Larry in northern Queensland in March. So far the state government has resisted calls for the region to be declared a natural disaster area.
