Minority of irrigators trade in water rights 28 Sep 2006
Irrigated farms of all sizes engaged in the trade of irrigation water, although water trading was not a frequent event for most farms according to a joint report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Productivity Commission. Farms with irrigated pastures were the most active water traders, with 43 per cent participating in some form of trade in the three years to 2003/04, compared with 36 per cent for broadacre and 27 per cent for horticulture farms.
