Last puff for tobacco growers
5 Oct 2006

Cigarette manufacturer Philip Morris is expected to make a buy-out offer for its remaining contracts with growers. More than 100 tobacco farmers in the Myrtleford region in Victoria’s north-east lost their main contract two weeks ago with manufacturer British American Tobacco, which used to buy 75 per cent of their crop. Philip Morris accounted for the remaining quarter. This represents the end of tobacco farming in Australia. Queensland's industry ended three years ago. All tobacco is now imported.
