Old fruit on offer for WA shoppers 9 Feb 2007
The WA Fruit Growers Association said that West Australian’s are being denied the freshest apples available and are being forced to buy fruit nearly 12 months old. In coming weeks the retail market is expected to be flooded with an estimated carryover of up to 3,000 tonnes of last season’s fruit as well as this season’s bumper crop. Angelo Logiudice, Fruit Growers Association apple and pear chairman, said that his calls to remove all old season produce had fallen on deaf ears. "Coles and Woolworths reckon they still need the old-season fruit. Well, that’s totally incorrect because over the next two to three weeks there will be enough volumes of new season fruit, whether its apples or pears, to supply the demand." Mr Logiudice said. Jim Cooper, Coles spokesman, said the supermarket carried the fruit lines customers wanted, including a range of apples which were stored by growers for out-of-season sales. Coles will stock the new season of apples from mid-February.
