Core issues with apple imports 2 Mar 2007
The federal government faces legal battles over quarantine decisions on apple imports. Tasmania has threatened to ban the imports of New Zealand apples and pears. Australian apple and pear growers, warning that their $4.5 billion dollar industry is under threat from fire blight disease, lost an appeal against Biosecurity Australia who recommended that NZ produce can be imported under strict conditions. New Zealand could take the dispute to the World Trade Organisation.
