Colour options for vegies 12 Mar 2007
Purple, red and yellow carrots, golden and candy striped beetroot, and yellow melon will soon be available. The Virginia Horticultural Centre is ready to serve its new colourful range of vegetables, if the trial plantings gain approval from Adelaide chefs this autumn. The centre has begun to harvest four colours of carrots, three beetroots, beans, melons and sunflowers. "It's not genetic engineering, but simply regular product development," the horticulture centre's post harvest manager Victoria Andrews said. The vegetables have been developed by South Australian and Victorian seed companies after selectively breeding individual plants and fine-tuning growing specifications. Flavour and texture is expected to be the same, with the new vegetables being more about colour and presentation, said Glenelg's Stamford Grand Hotel executive chef Damian Goody.
