First drought and now birds 19 Apr 2007
Apple growers in the Harcourt area were already battling drought, hail and frost but now birds have become another threat to their livelihood. Harcourt Apple Growers Association president Trevor Peeler said musk lorikeets destroyed 20 per cent of the area's fuji apple variety harvest and could do the same to its pink ladies if unchecked. Mr Peeler said the birds were also suffering from drought and a lack of their usual food, gumnut blossoms. Growers have been forced to pick fruit before optimal picking time.
