Grape growers hope for La Nina 20 Apr 2007
Unless the Murray River system receives much needed rain over the coming months, citrus and wine grape growers could be forced to leave the land in droves. An unprecedented zero water allocation would devastate perennial crops, which, if they have to be replanted, can take up to seven years to generate a return. However, the emergence of a La Nina weather system, which generally means above average rains, has encouraged some farmers to hope that they may receive some water this season.
