Growers lose $1 million in water saga
7 May 2007

Internal Victorian State Government documents report that damage to vegetables during the "yellow lettuce" saga in Werribee cost growers $1 million last year. Crops of lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli in the Werribee irrigation district, irrigated by recycled water from the nearby treatment plant, showed signs of yellowing and stunted growth. Water Minister John Thwaites said that growers should not expect compensation. "I don't believe that's a particular issue...if it wasn't for recycled water, most of the growers would have very little water and they wouldn't be able to function there," he said. "If they have any legal claims, they are entitled to make them."
