Irrigators unhappy with compensation 24 May 2007
Irrigators in NSW say that the $100 million in compensation offered by the state and federal governments for water licence reductions is not sufficient and four class actions against the state government are under way. Tim Watson, a western NSW farmer and president of the Hillston Bore Pumpers Association, said "Farmers who would normally receive over $1,000 on the open market for a megalitre of water can expect to receive less than $70 per megalitre under the cuts". Class actions are in progress or planned by farmers in Hillston, the lower Murray Valley, the Murrumbidgee Valley and the Namoi Valley.
