Victoria still not convinced about water
28 May 2007

The Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks, has warned that a follow-up meeting with Prime Minister John Howard will only be productive if more details about the proposed $10 billion water plan are provided. Mr Bracks has said "Having now received two draft tranches of the Water Bill, it is very clear that the range of powers being sought by the Commonwealth is exceptionally broad and still lacking clear definition." Other states seem prepared to support the plan but Victoria wants clearer objectives for the policy, legislation to protect Victorian irrigators and the environment, as well as assurances that the commonwealth would not use its increased powers for other purposes.
