Quarantine under fire 30 May 2007
The World Trade Organisation's head, Dr Gretchen Stanton has said "There is a perception that Australia is way too defensive in its approach to quarantine" after a number of countries had expressed concerns about Australia's defensive attitude to quarantine and commitment to free trade. Dr Stanton, speaking at a conference in Canberra last week, said that Australia should be going to the WTO quarantine committee and go on the front foot to argue what is being done about quarantine. The chief of Biosecurity Australia (BA), John Cahill, has said that BA will soon release new procedures for import risk analyses with maximum time-frames of between 2 and 2.5 years.
