NZ apples held up again
22 Jun 2007

The Senate's Rural and Regional Affairs committee, which is investigating the risks involved in importing apples from New Zealand, has disagreed with Biosecurity Australia's (BA) assessment that the chance of fire blight becoming established in Australia is low. The committee has recommended that apples not be imported until it has reviewed the scientific evidence used by BA when deciding that the risk of fire blight was acceptable. Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran, said "The new inspection procedures for NZ apples will be the most stringent for imported apples anywhere in the world. Australia cannot adopt a zero quarantine risk policy."
