Fruit and veg becoming scarce
29 Jun 2007

The price of fruit and vegetables may triple due to extreme weather conditions across much of the south-eastern parts of Australia. While large areas have been impacted by flooding, there has still been very little rainfall in the catchment areas of the Murray-Darling basin. The basin produces around 40 per cent of the nation's food but growers are facing zero water allocation from this Sunday which will have reduce availability of table grapes, apples, pears, stone fruit, lemons, mandarins, grapefruit, tomatoes, lettuce, salad vegetables and dairy. On top of this, heavy rain in North Queensland is threatening their crops of tomatoes and leafy vegetables.
