Rice and cotton offer flexibility
3 Jul 2007

Water intensive seasonal crops still have a place in Australian agriculture according to scientist and water commissioner Peter Cullen. Cotton and rice are more flexible than perennial crops like wine grapes and citrus as production can be reduced in drier years. Water usage dropped 23 per cent from 2000-01 to 2004-05 due to a 72 per cent reduction in rice production and 37 per cent for cotton. Perennial crops are now at risk as irrigators face zero water allocations for the first time.
