Melbourne pump plan criticised
13 Jul 2007

The food bowl modernisation upgrade project proposed by the Bracks government in Victoria has come under fire from the Federal Minister for Workforce Participation, Sharman Stone. The plan would invest $1 billion in upgrading irrigation in the state's Goulburn-Murray region and includes a pipeline to pump water to Melbourne. Dr Stone said "There is real concern that the environmental impacts, as well as the loss of environmental flows, could be as significant as the economic and community impacts of higher water prices, reduced water access and water security for the meat producers, dairy farmers and fruit growers in northern Victoria."
