Crops may like changed climate 19 Jul 2007
While climate change could increase the number of trees and improve crop yields through higher levels of carbon dioxide, there are many negative consequences to offset this positive. According to the head of the Commonwealth Climate Adaptation Program, Andrew Ash, trials have found that doubling the level of CO2 improved the photosynthesis and water efficiency of plants and increased wheat yield by 10 to 50 per cent and increased cotton biomass by 35 per cent. However for each percentage point drop in rainfall there is a two to three per cent reduction in run-off which has disastrous consequences for the viability of the Murray-Darling basin.
