Nationals withdraw water bill support
30 Jul 2007

The Queensland Nationals have withdrawn their support for the federal government's $10 billion Murray-Darling takeover plan. The party voted against supporting the plan with Senator Barnaby Joyce saying that the legislation did not deliver on some of the promises put forward by the federal government. Senator Joyce said that it did not guarantee water access rights and entitlements, did not rule out compulsory acquisition of water, and did not provide fair compensation for affected users. Incoming Victorian premier John Brumby has said that Victoria will not back down from its opposition to the scheme.
