NZ takes apple battle to WTO 3 Aug 2007
New Zealand has said that it is going to challenge Australian restrictions on imports of its apples through the World Trade Organisation. A meeting between Trade Minister Warren Truss and his counterpart in New Zealand, Phil Goff, ended with NZ saying that going to the WTO remained a "live option". While Biosecurity Australia has given permission for imports New Zealand says that the conditions are so stringent that they are all but impossible to meet. The requirements include orchard inspections to check for fire blight, disinfection treatments in packing houses, and auditing that involves the Australian Quarantine and Inspection service.
