Compulsory water buybacks out, for now
6 Aug 2007

The Howard Government has ruled out the forced acquisition of farmers' water entitlements under the Murray-Darling takeover plan. Senator Barnaby Joyce, who had been holding out against the plan, said yesterday that the change was good but that he’d have to wait to see the final draft before agreeing to support the plan. Wentworth Group scientist Mike Young has warned that compulsory buybacks should still be on the table. "If farmers want secure and reliable supplies, the only way to do it is to reduce the number of entitlements in the system. You can't have your cake and eat it too," he said.
