Murray water deal sinking 9 Aug 2007
The NSW Premier, Morris Iemma has been one of the strongest supporters of the federal Murray-Darling water plan but yesterday said that the chances of the plan surviving were not good. Legislation to implement the plan is currently before federal parliament containing a clause that irrigation infrastructure and compensation payments will only be available if all four affected states agree to the deal. Victoria has refused to sign so all states will miss out. The Environment and Water Resources minister Malcolm Turnbull said that NSW had no reason to withdraw its support for the plan but Mr Iemma said that the goalposts had been changed because "they've been unable to get Victoria and are wanting to penalise NSW".
