Water funds to flow without powers 10 Aug 2007
The Federal Water Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said that most funding for the Murray-Darling water plan would be available whether or not all four basin states signed over powers to the commonwealth to give it more control then envisioned in the legislation. The NSW Premier Morris Iemma said yesterday that the federal government was reneging on its offer to take over the state’s liability for cuts in water licences beyond 2014 but the federal government said that they would only do this if all four states referred powers. Mr Turnbull said that the future liability was a small part of the package as over-allocation issues should have already been resolved at the expense of the commonwealth by 2015.
