Minister under fire over apple challenge 24 Aug 2007
Australian farmers are concerned that the move by New Zealand to take their challenge to our apple import restrictions to the World Trade Organisation could have a knock-on effect to other agricultural sectors. Officials from Australia and New Zealand have been negotiating over the conditions under which imports would be allowed, but delays are one of the reasons cited by New Zealand for the confrontation. The National Farmer's Federation president, David Crombie, said that the challenge to Australian quarantine restrictions could be used by other parties that have bigger fish to fry. Other farm leaders have gone as far as suggesting that the Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran had delayed finalising an agreement which would allow imports from New Zealand to appease Australian apple growers ahead of the federal election.
